Literacy Curriculum

The ESD 105 Migrant Education Regional Office assists educators in expanding their knowledge of English language development, literacy and learning strategies to support students in achieving high levels of understanding in content areas. Our literacy program strives for reading, writing, and oral fluency of kindergarten to 12th grade students.

By building relationships with the districts and their federal project directors, we are able to recommend research-based programs and professional development that directly meet a district's needs based on local data. A combination of literacy, school improvement training, and instructional strategy programs provided by MERO and ESD 105 assists districts with tools important to their work of increasing student academic achievement.

The workshops and trainings listed below are available to districts we serve. For more information on programs described on this page, contact our Migrant Literacy coordinator, Dora DeWitt.

ASSESSMENT AND SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

Washington Language Proficiency Test (WLPT) Training

Training is available for districts in need of more specific understanding for personnel who administer and score the WLPT. The Washington Language Proficiency Test is used to assess students' proficiency in reading and writing in English.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocols (SIOP)

Intensive training in SIOP is provided, using the most current model for English language instruction based on research developed by Jana Echevarria, MaryEllen Vogt, and Deborah Short, and through the Center for Applied Linguistics. Components include lesson preparation, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice/application, lesson delivery, review/assessment, and specific lesson plans.
