American Honda Foundation grant to
Regional Science Education Project

The Regional Science Education Project at ESD 105 received a $75,000 grant from the American Honda Foundation at the start of 2006 to help boost large-scale improvement of K-6 science education in our area's classrooms. The funds are supporting professional development of science classrooms and will finance the purchase of new science kits and refurbishment of existing ones.

Bob Hall, owner of Hall's Mazda/Honda in Yakima, played a key role in providing the initial connection with the American Honda Foundation after meeting with the ESD 105 professional development team in 2005. A representative from the American Honda Foundation visited science classrooms in the West Valley School District in November 2005.

"The Honda grant will increase the availability of teacher training and continue the development of science leaders in each district," said Dr. Jane Gutting, ESD 105 superintendent. "This is one more example of the business community and the ESD leveraging resources to meet regional needs."

The Regional Science Education Project involves 22 public school districts and two private schools. The participating schools share science kits that engage K-6 students in hands-on activities that incorporate inquiry-based learning.
