Creating a Climate for Success:
Linking Partnerships

The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative was launched in 2002 and concluded in the spring of 2007. It brought together education, mental health, law enforcement, juvenile justice system, treatment providers, and community agencies to provide comprehensive services to students and families at the school site or in the community.

Services:
The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative focused on eight school districts and communities in central Washington that demonstrate high incidence of substance abuse, violence, poverty, and low school/community bonding. Through this program, the Sunnyside, Toppenish, Wapato, Granger, Grandview, Mabton, Wahluke, and Mt. Adams School Districts not only enhanced existing programs, but also developed new programs at their school sites.

Goals:
• Increase academic success by creating safe and drug-free school environments
Provide school-based interventions and referral to mental health, drug treatment, and other community services
Create a sustainable and ongoing systems change that results in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students and families bonding with the school and community and collectively working to reduce community risk factors
